Tips for installing roof fascia

Fascia installation happens to be a significantfeature of proper roof construction. The fascia is located below the roof line, just behind the gutters. It extends around the entire building. Wood is the most widely used material for roof fascia, although plastic and aluminum are also used. Fascia assistsguard your home from the fundamentals. The fascia also keeps birds, small animals, and debris out of your home. Proper roof fascia installation helps complete the look of your home. Follow the guide below for tips on installing wood fascia.

Step 1 - Measurements

Take measurements along the roof line to find out the exact sizes of boards you need to cut for your fascia. Miter joints require a 1 to 2 inch allowance. This will give you more freedom as you shape the ends of the board to meet at the corners. Use a sliding T-bevel tool to take precise angle measurements. Gutter lengths can give you a rough estimate of how much fascia you need to purchase.

Step 2 - Cut

Purchase the required amount of pressure-treated lumber from a sawmill. It helps if you cut the boards several days before laying them. This gives the wood a good chance to dry properly before installing it in the house. It also allows you to work faster and more efficiently. Cut the wood to match the measurements you took.

Step 3 - Design the fascia

It is best to place the fascia in the order you took the measurements. This will make installation easier. Start from a corner of your house. Spread the fascia on the floor until you return to the initial placement point.

Step 4 - Installation

It helps if you have a couple of helpers to support you on the project. Someone on the ground can pass the fascia boards to another helper on a ladder next to you. Then you can receive the fascia and install. The helper on a ladder beside you will also help support the fascia during installation. This allows you to use both hands to drive nails and speeds up work. Nail the fascia boards to the ends of the beam.

Step 5 - seams and corners

These require a tight seal to be airtight. Loose seams and corners will allow water to easily seep into your home. Make sure to place the fascia boardstightly together for a secure fit. Some fascia boards with angled ends may be slightly larger than the available space. Sand the edges for a proper fit. Seal the seams and corners with caulking.

Step 6 - Apply putty

Once you’ve installed all the fascia panels, put some wood putty in each of the screw holes. This helps hide the screws and also makes painting easier.

Step 7 - Paint

Apply 2 coats of primer to the newly installed fascia. Allow first coat for dryingwholly before applying second coat. Paint your fascia to match your home’s color scheme well.

Maintain your fascia

To take care of your soffit and your fascia, it is especially important to take care of your gutters! They are the ones that pick up and hold much of the dirt that collects around the roof. Empty your gutters regularly and make sure there are no breakages.

Finally, it happens that small creatures create a nest in the soffits during the cold period. These can create damage by adding extra weight that the structure cannot support. You must therefore try to move them, reducing their sources of food and blocking access.
